Slay the Spire 1 vs 2 — What Changed?
Slay the Spire 2 isn't just a DLC pack with a new coat of paint. Mega Crit rebuilt the game from the ground up in a new engine. The core loop is the same — climb the Spire, fight monsters, collect cards — but almost everything else got touched.
| Feature | Slay the Spire 1 | Slay the Spire 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Classes | 4 (Ironclad, Silent, Defect, Watcher) | 5 (including Necrobinder, Pyroclast) |
| Tinker Time | No | Yes — new timing mechanic |
| Graphics | 2D pixel art | 3D models with pixel texture style |
| Enemy types | ~50 | ~80+ with new behaviors |
| Relics | ~170 | ~250+ |
Slay the Spire 2 is a full sequel, not an expansion. Save data and mods from the first game do not carry over.
Which one should you play? If you never finished the first game, go finish it. Spire 1 is cheaper, complete, and has years of mod support. If you've beaten Ascension 20 on all four characters, Spire 2 is worth the jump.
FAQ
- Is Slay the Spire 2 harder than the first game?
- Yes. The early enemies hit harder and the new mechanics (Tinker Time, Doom) add more ways to lose. Veteran players will adjust fast, but beginners will feel the difference.
- Can I still play Slay the Spire 1?
- Absolutely. The first game still holds up and has a massive modding community. Many players prefer the simpler systems.
- Will Slay the Spire 2 get all the same characters as the first game?
- The Ironclad, Silent, and Defect return. The Watcher is not confirmed for the launch roster. Two new classes — Necrobinder and Pyroclast — replace some of the old lineup.
